'Bomb hoax bars Qureshis entry

LAHORE FIA Additional Director General Zafar Qureshi could not resume inquiry into NICL scam on Saturday since he was not allowed to enter the FIA office here at Regal Chowk on the pretext of a bomb hoax call. Mr Zafar Qureshi reached his office at FIA regional headquarter in Lahore to take charge of his office on Saturday on direction of Supreme Court of Pakistan after much tension between the judiciary and the government over the issues pertaining to probe into NICL land scam. Moonis Elahi, a PML-Q leader and son of former Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi is also an accused in the fraud case. The FIA office was evacuated and staff was sent home even after the clearance by the bomb disposal squad, said an FIA officer. Qureshi was told by the subordinate staff that office was locked due to the bomb hoax, though he introduce himself and told that he had come to restart the investigation into NICL case. It was an abnormal bomb threat which was received on the personal cell number of FIA Security Assistant Director Hammad rather than on an official landline that mostly happens in such cases said Riaz, a bomb disposal squad member, while talking to The Nation. He said that when he asked AD security as to from which number the call was made, he replied there was only written 'call-1 on his cell phone screen. The caller first spoke in Urdu and then in Punjabi, claiming that he had planted a bomb in FIA building, and telling to leave the building immediately if anyone wanted to save ones life. After the threat the FIA officials rushed outside. A deputy director said some accused under his custody were in lockup at the premises and he asked the subordinate staff to get them to some safer place, and they were then shifted to Racecourse Police Station. Sources in FIA disclosed that a conspiracy was being hatched a couple of days back in FIA office Lahore to stop Qureshi from entering the office, after issuance of his restoration orders from Supreme Court. An FIA officer seeking anonymity said that it was strange that even after clearance from bomb disposal staff the building of FIA remained locked due to reasons best known to the FIA provincial chief, Waqar Haider. He said that drama was staged only to hinder the entrance of Qureshi. It is also noteworthy that after restoration of Zafar Qureshi, the FIA DG has sent the investigation teams four members Deputy Director Javed Shah, Assistant Directors Khalid Anees and Muhammad Ahmad and Inspector Muhammad Sarwar on forced leave till September 30, 2011, the date of retirement of Zafar Ahmad Qureshi. In the meanwhile good number of visitors who came from far flung areas remained stuck outside the FIA office. Pakistan.
