NA opens debate on budget today

ISLAMABAD - The National Assembly would formally start debate on budget for fiscal year of 2008-09 from today (Saturday). Speaker National Assembly Dr Fahmida Mirza would chair the session to be held at 10:00am. The Senate would simultaneously initiate debate on finance bill 2008-09. Opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhary Pervez Elahi would initiate debate on budget for fiscal year of 2008-09. Advisor to Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Izhar Amrohi said about 60 hours debate would be held on budget and every political party would be allotted times in accordance with seat of their Parliamentarian in the lower house. The session could also be held on Saturday and Sunday so that maximum Parliamentarian could express their views on finance bill 2008-09, he said, adding that Parliamentary leader of each political party would have fifty minutes for debate on budget while Parliamentarian could speak for five minutes each. Advisor to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs further informed that the debate on budget would likely be completed till June 20. He said Federal Finance Minister would wind up debate and after that necessary expenditure and budget of each ministry would be passed from the National Assembly. Voting would be also executed at cut motions of opposition during the budget debate, he said, adding that treasury members would be barred to submit cut motion. He hoped that the budget would be passed on June 26.
