ISLAMABAD PM Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday directed the Railway authorities to install manned safety gate within 48 hours at Mian Channu railway crossing where innocent people lost lives two days ago. He further directed the Ministry of Railways to submit a report within 10 days about all the Railway crossings, which do not have safety gates and could result in any unfortunate incident. Earlier, the federal government announced Rs500,000 each for heirs of the victims as compensation, who lost their lives in the Mian Channu train-van accident, besides Rs100,000 and Rs200,000 respectively for minor and critical injured respectively. Minister for Railway was of the view that the accident could have been avoided if the van driver had taken extra care while crossing the gate in foggy weather. The ministry has already moved a summary to the federal cabinet for approval of a project to ensure gates at railway crossings, he added. The project would cost Rs38 billion, to streamline the system at existing 2,382 un-manned railway crossings, he said adding that Rs45,000 are needed to deploy staff, construct gate and install signal at the each crossing point.
