ISLAMABAD - Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman on Saturday called on Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani at the Prime Minister House and tendered her resignation. Sherry called on the Prime Minister along with her husband and explained the causes behind her resignation as Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting. After accepting the resignation of Sherry Rehman, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani directed Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas Qamaruz Zaman Kaira to take additional charge of the ministry. According to sources Sherry Rehman had some complaints regarding the undue interference of some other ministers in the affairs of the Ministry of Information about which she had raised objections several times but when this practice was not stopped she was left with no choice but to step down. She also said that some federal ministers had been issuing orders to PEMRA unwarrantedly. She also told the Prime Minister that their unwarranted interference or act of overstepping their powers had affected her prestige adversely. Sherry also informed the Prime Minister of Governor Punjab Salman Taseer's insulting behaviour with her. According to the sources she further told the Prime Minister that she would continue supporting the government policies. Earlier, Sherry had indicated to resign if crackdown was launched against media. After having a little discussion on the matter, the Premier accepted her resignation as the matter had been discussed in detail during the meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Friday night where she had verbally announced to quit the cabinet. Sherry Rehman is the third minister of the PPP-led government who has resigned from the cabinet. Earlier Khawaja Muhammad Khan Hoti and Mian Raza Rabbani had resigned from their ministries.
