NEW YORK - A US foreign policy expert has called for capturing Taliban leaders in Pakistan and Afghanistan, instead of killing them with drones strikes, in a bid to gather better intelligence of their plans. Noting that the drone strikes were inspiring more attacks on America than they prevent, Stuart Gottlieb, a former policy adviser to two US senators, said in a letter published in The New York Times Thursday that the drone-based policy resulted in the loss of intelligence from assassinated Taliban and Qaeda leaders. With a growing nexus between American citizens and terrorist groups in Pakistan, the US needs all the information it can muster on the nature of these links, wrote Gottlieb, who now teaches at Yale and Columbia. The Obama administration needs to begin placing a greater priority on capturing and interrogating senior Taliban and Qaeda leaders, rather than executing them.
