2 Nato soldiers among 10 dead in Afghan unrest

KABUL  - Two Nato-led soldiers were among 10 people reported killed Friday in new violence in Afghanistan, where a Taliban-led insurgency is gaining pace with a spike in deadly attacks this year. The soldiers died after being attacked in eastern Afghanistan Friday, Nato's 40-nation International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said in a statement that did not give the nationalities of the soldiers. "Two Isaf service members died as a result of wounds suffered during an IED (improvised explosives device) strike and small arms fire attack on their patrol in eastern Afghanistan today," it said in a statement. Four Afghan police were killed and five were wounded in a separate attack Friday in the southern province of Helmand, a Taliban hotspot and Afghanistan's key opium-growing area. He blamed the attack on the "enemies of Afghanistan", a term that most often refers to the Taliban. Four Taliban were killed in an operation on Thursday night in the neighbouring province of Uruzgan, police there said. Meanwhile, the United Nations expert on education in a strongly worded statement Friday said the Taliban's "systematic" targeting of educators in Afghanistan must not go unpunished,. "Their attacks on schools, teachers and others working on education are systematic, not random," said Vernor Munoz Villalobos in a statement in Geneva.
