Punjab seeks Centre's help for border patrol

LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif called on Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani at the State Guest House on Sunday. The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere in which matters regarding strengthening of democracy, Senate elections and overall situation of the country were discussed in detail. It was agreed that both the political parties would play their positive role for continuity of democracy and strengthening of democratic institutions in the country. It was further agreed in the meeting between the two leaders that both the parties would respect each other's mandate for meeting the challenges confronting Pakistan and would nominate their candidates for Senate elections as per their number of seats in order to eliminate horse-trading as the mandate of February 18 elections demands the same. Monitoring Desk adds: Both also exchanged views on political situation of the country besides overall law and order situation, reported a private TV channel. Shahbaz said that assistance was required from the Federal Government for stepping up patrolling on Punjab's borders aimed at checking the intrusion of terrorists into the province. On this, the Prime Minister assured of extending complete cooperation by the Federal Government. The Prime Minister said that steps would be taken to make effective information sharing between the Centre and the provinces.
