Pakistan, China sign 4 agreements, MoUs

BEIJING (APP) - Pakistan and China on Thursday signed two agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on space concessional loan, space technology and alternative energy. Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani witnessed the signing ceremonies as the respective officials of the companies inked the documents. The concessional loan agreement for PAKSAT was signed between Pakistans Economic Affairs Division and Export Import Bank of China. Under the agreement, China would provide an amount of $190million for the supply of PAKSAT-1R, which would replace the PAKSAT-1 that has a lifespan till 2011. The loan would cover 85 percent of the cost of the project. Another agreement was signed between Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and China Great Wall Industry Corporation for Pakistan-1R Satellite Ground Control Segment. The Ground Control Segment would comprise the establishment of stations at Lahore and Karachi. The stations would be used to monitor the satellite and control its operation for the duration of its 15-year life. Pakistans Alternative Energy Board signed MoUs with Chinas Wuxi SUNTECH Power Company and China Electric Equipment Group Solar Energy Research Institute Co Ltd (CEEG SI) respectively for cooperation in the field of alternate energy projects in Pakistan. Both SUNTECH and CEEG SI are major Chinese companies in the field of alternative energy and involved in several projects both in China and abroad. The two companies are interested in undertaking alternate energy projects in Pakistan to help overcome the power crisis in the country. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gilani and Irans First Vice President MR Rahimi met here and agreed to expedite the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project. The two leaders, who are in the Chinese capital to attend the summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization, discussed ways and means to strengthen their mutual relationship for the benefit of two nations. Pakistans ambassador to China Masood Khan said that after the meeting both the leaders agreed to direct their concerned sides on pursuing the project of Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project on priority basis. He said the two sides expressed their belief that the projects completion would strengthen relationship between Pakistan and Iran. He said the two sides decided to complete the already initiated Pakistan-Iran-Turkey railway link and also noted the recent strengthening of air links between the two countries. Masood said the Iranian vice president told Gilani that his government had directed the relevant ministries to focus on enhancing trade links with Pakistan. He said the PM thanked Rahimi for Irans financial assistance at the Friends of Democratic Pakistan forum and said it would be helpful in properly carrying out the projects. Later, Prime Minister also held meetings with Chinese Gezhouba Group Company and with China National Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Cooperation.
