LAHORE - The scheduled oath-taking ceremony of Acting Punjab Governor Justice Zahid Hussain, the Chief Justice of Lahore High Court (LHC), was on Tuesday postponed till today (Wednesday) due to delayed departure of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer to Dubai. Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday appointed Justice Zahid Hussain as Acting Governor of Punjab instead of Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Muhammad Iqbal. According to sources in Governor's House, Salman Taseer was scheduled to leave for Dubai on Tuesday, but his small aircraft could not take off from Lahore Airport due to bad weather conditions. The Governor will now fly to Dubai on Wednesday (today), they further said. The sources also confirmed that Chief Justice Lahore High Court has been appointed as acting Punjab governor by President Asif Ali Zardari. It is to be noted that President Zardari had earlier appointed Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Muhammad Iqbal as acting governor during Salman Taseer's recent Dubai visit. But Rana's act of administering oath to the provincial Ombudsman in Taseer's absence invited strong criticism from PPP circles including the governor, who believed that acting governor could not take any decision about matters of permanent nature in Governor's absence. The PPP's Punjab Secretary Finance, Aurangzeb, has challenged acting governor's action before Lahore High Court, and his petition has been admitted for hearing.
