Nawaz wants probe into French subs deal

LAHORE PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif said on Tuesday that the government should investigate the French submarines deal brokered in 1994 involving alleged kickbacks amounting to $49.50 million. Addressing PML-N leaders and party workers from Faisalabad at his Raiwind Estate here, Nawaz Sharif demanded the government to take strict action against those political, military and civil persons involved in the scam. He said there were no sacred cows in the country and no one was above the law and accountability. He said that obtaining of Rs 4 billion kickbacks in just one deal was a matter of great concern especially in a country where people were having problems of education, health and shortage of power and sugar. He reiterated that present government should complete its five-year term with dignity as the PML-N had the patience to wait. He, however, said that transfer of power at the end of present governments tenure should be in accordance with the law and the Constitution. He said PML-N was observing complete patience to save the system, but government should also fulfil its responsibility and ensure good governance.
