Ruling MPs blast govt for pursuing Musharraf policies

ISLAMABAD - The in-camera proceedings of the joint session of the Parliament Thursday started with discussion on country's national security and counter terrorism policy unveiled by the government. Joint sitting that resumed with Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza in the chair was later adjourned to meet again on Friday. Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani attended the session. According to the informed sources, the parliamentary leaders of different political parties questioned the ongoing military operation in FATA, PATA and parts of NWFP and its relation to the overall security situation in the country. Interestingly, some lawmakers from the ruling alliance also hit hard the government for pursuing the policies of former President Pervez Musharraf on national security, war on terror and ongoing military operations in FATA and parts of the NWFP. JUI(F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who is also Chairman of the Special Committee of the National Assembly on Kashmir, lambasted the government for continuing the policies of Musharraf regime. He noted that thousands of innocent citizens had been killed during the past 8 years, and questioned the ownership of terror war by the incumbent government saying how the US launched war could be the war of Pakistan? The JUI(F) Chief warned that security situation would further deteriorate in the country if the government did not abandon the policy of the former President Musharraf. He came hard on the government for its failure in abiding by the pacts reached with the tribesmen in Swat and said that neither the seminaries or their students had been involved in the incidents of violence nor was  such training imparted in any Madrassah, he asserted. While taking part in the debate, the Opposition leader in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan sought government's categorical clarification on whether it was following the policy of Musharraf regime or had formulated a new policy. He called for formulation of new policy that should reflect the aspirations of the people and should be in line with the national interest. On this the informed sources said that leader of the House in the Senate Mian Raza Rabbani stood up and said that PPP had framed its own policy in line with the people's aspirations and requirements of the country and it was being followed. This policy, he said, had no bearing on Pervez Musharraf's policy, he added. The PML-Q MPs including Kamil Ali Agha and Faisal Saleh Hayat spoke and flayed the government for its flawed policies. It was further learnt that Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani had taken serious view of the absence of some ministers and MPs belonging to the treasury benches and directed the PPP chief whip Syed Khurshid Shah to take disciplinary action against those who did not attend the Thursday's in-camera session.
