No compromise on national security: PM

RAWALPINDI - Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani has said that the country's defence was in safe hands and reiterated his government's commitment towards the country's strategic programme aimed at maintaining minimum credible deterrence. The Prime Minister was speaking after attending a detailed briefing on the various dimensions of Pakistan's nuclear programme at the Strategic Plans Division, the Secretariat of the National Command Authority, here on Thursday. "Pakistan's security will always remain government's top priority," the Premier Gillani said after expressing satisfaction over the effectiveness of Command and Control Structures of Pakistan's nuclear capability. He said that the structures, which had now matured, were well conceived and elaborate. "It has been ensured that our nuclear assets are safe and secure, and the force development according to the needs of Pakistan's minimum deterrence is progressing well," he added. Reiterating his government's commitment to the Strategic Programme Premier Gillani said that Pakistan believed in maintaining minimum credible deterrence as a cornerstone of its national security policy. He said as a responsible, declared and acknowledged nuclear power, Pakistan would continue to play a positive role in international efforts aimed at non-proliferation. Besides Prime Minister, the briefing was also attended by the Federal Minister for Defence Ch Ahmad Mukhtar, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Federal Minister for Finance Senator Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ms Sherry Rehman, Adviser to PM on National Security Mahmood Ali Durrani and the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Tariq Majid. Earlier, on his arrival at the Joint Staff Headquarters, the Prime Minister was received by the CJCSC General Tariq Majid. A smartly turned-out Armed Forces Contingent presented guard of honour to the Prime Minister. General Tariq Majid gave briefing to Prime Minister Gillani on matters relating to defence and security and responded to a number of queries regarding strengthening the country's defence and PM assured that the country defence needs would be fully met.
