PBC continues harassing female worker

ISLAMABAD Top management of the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) went crazy after publication of TheNation's story about workplace harassment of a senior producer, Anila Saleem, as it issued an explanation memorandum to her when she was on the medical leave. Earlier I was the victim of workplace harassment, but now they are torturing me mentally over publics reaction against them, Anila told TheNation from Lahore on telephone. Despite the fact that Anila was on the bed-rest as advised by her doctors, the PBC ensured deliverance of the memorandum, which was received by her at her residence in Lahore at 9:30 PM Wednesday. A copy of the memorandum, which was attained by the reliable sources, was also attached with the story. What else would be the harassment, when they are giving me shocks during medical leave, she said adding that she was also not being provided medical cover. To a question, Anila said that she had already mentioned in her application that she was being harassed at the workplace and did not mention about demotion from previous designation. It is pertinent to mention here that she had forwarded application to Senator Haji Adil (a member of Standing Committee of Information and Broadcasting) regarding workplace harassment so that the matter could be taken up and solved in the Standing Committee. I cant tolerate the character assassination at all, so I forwarded the application in a bid to stop workplace harassment, she added. Reportedly, a number of times, she complained to DG PBC against the environment of the office but no action was taken. It is pertinent to mention here that Senator Haji Adeel had confirmed that he had received an application in this regard. Haji Adeel said that he had received other telephone calls from the same department appealing for proper action against the incident of workplace harassment. Earlier, when contacted, DG PBC, Murtaza Solangi said that he would not comment on the internal matters of the organisation. He further refused to comment on the matter. Interestingly, in the so-called 'clarification that Solangi-led PBC administration had sent was actually comprising irrelevant assumptions instead of disputing the logical facts of our story. The PBC went too far as to say that Miss Anila was found in financial irregularities despite that she was never implicated or put to trial in any court of law. TheNation story never discussed anything regarding financial issues and simply reported the incident of workplace harassment that had nothing to do with 'financial irregularities. However, another day, he in a clarification, said that Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation totally rejects the report (published in Daily The Nation on 17.02.2010 as misleading, scandalous and malicious. A press release issued by the PBC says that headline of the story Workplace harassment of Women at PBC, itself is misleading and an effort to malign a national media organisation. Through this story an attempt has been made to divert attention from the serious allegations and take refuge behind the cover of harassment of women (A very easy way to raise hue and cry to hide ones misdoing). The reporter, unfortunately without going into the facts of the case of Ms. Anila Saleem, Senior Producer Radio Pakistan Lahore opted to give it a totally different colour and make it a case of harassment of women, which it is absolutely not. PBC strongly rejects this wild allegation, on the contrary some PBC official are in fact victims of harassment and threats by her (which is part of the official record). The case of Ms. Anila Saleem is simply a case of corruption and misconduct proved thorough investigation by the Departmental Inquiry Committee. She was found involved in gross financial irregularities, misuse of her position and violation of office rules. However, this clarification is nothing more than a hopeless account of mudslinging, TheNation stands by its story.
