ISLAMABAD (APP) - Chairman Senate, Farooq H Naek has asked Senate Secretariat to shake off lethargy and inertia immediately and galvanise into action to help achieve the objectives for which the Upper House of the Parliament was created. He was formally addressing the senior officials of the Senate Secretariat at the Parliament House here on Tuesday for the first time after assuming the office of the Chairman. The Chairman said that the Senate is a prestigious national organisation and constitutional forum and not a routine type of govt office or department. Therefore, he said, every effort must be made to run and manage the secretariat in the most professional, efficient and transparent manner to come up to the expectation of the people. He directed the officers and staff to maintain office discipline and decorum along with dealing with the general public in a courteous manner. "The attitude of our officials must be in harmony with the norms of decency and good behaviour", he added. "What we need to focus on from now onwards is efficiency and discipline; any violation and breach of which would invite strict punitive action, he stated. He also urged the senior officials to pay maximum attention to legislation, which remains the basic function of this prestigious forum. Farooq Naek said it was gratifying to note that now the Upper House also has a role in the budget making in the sense that it could forward its recommendations of the money bills and finance bills to the NA. "We will uphold the Constitution and work according to the Rules of Business, Supremacy of the Constitution and adherence to the rule of law would remain our most cherished objectives," he observed. The Chairman also invited suggestions from the senior officials in writing to bring about further improvements in the working. The Secretary Senate, Raja Muhammad Amin, Additional Secretary Senate, Iftikharullah Babar and Additional Secretary Shahiq A Khan attended the meeting among others.
