Govt to expedite 'investigation process'

ISLAMABAD The tense Governments quarters must have heaved a huge sigh of relief after the Report of United Nations, Commission on Benazir Bhuttos murder proved 'harmless for them. The Government is all set to speed up the 'investigation into Benazir Bhuttos murder in the light of Reports finings. The joint investigation team to be formed in this regard, as reported in this newspaper on Saturday, and it would be further divided into special teams that would go to neighbouring countries for the criminal investigations related to BBs murder, it is credibly learnt. These special teams, that would presumably be three in number, would be sent to UAE, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia for a detailed probe, it was heard from a key government functionary in the corridors of power. A special team might also be sent to the UK to incorporate the findings of Scotland Yard in the detailed probe. After the United Nations had given a clean chit to the present Government in BBs murder case, the Government gurus have finally come into action to 'nab the 'real culprits. The proposal of sending the special investigation teams to other countries had been under consideration after the UN had refused to incorporate the 'findings of UAE, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia in the final draft for making changes accordingly. Besides, the same Report that has drawn mixed reaction from political quarters has not gone well with some senior UN diplomats either. A credible UN diplomat from UN Headquarters, New York, talking to this correspondent on Monday, said that the mandate of the Report was restricted from judgemental to circumstantial that actually killed the purpose of real fact finding. The official referred to three recent reports published by the UN in South Asian region including Sri Lanka and Afghanistan that had an enormous outcome because of domestic leverages that are normally acquired during the course of fact findings. Commenting on the perception that the Report gave a silent refuge to some key position holders in the present Government who had suspicious roles to play at the time of BBs assassination in Liaquat Bagh Rawalpindi, the official admitted that the Report should have been more elaborative, descriptive, direct and judgmental had there werent any constant 'political encroachments. It may be recalled here that the restless Government quarters had asked the UN to delay the publication of the Report on March 31 this year. To their ultimate relief, the much-awaited findings of the UN Commission blamed the previous regime for Benazirs killing and used some officials of Rawalpindi police and security agencies as scapegoats but 'acquitted some key suspects sharing the powerful slots in the present Government.
