Nawazs penchant for 'Khyber' triggered Hazara unrest

LAHORE - Following a series of violent protests in Hazara Division and resignation of PML-N stalwart Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan Abbasi from his National Assembly seat, it has been alleged that PML-N Chief Mian Nawaz Sharifs penchant for including 'Khyber in the new name of the NWFP trigged unrest in the region. According to well-placed sources in the PML-N and the ANP, the negotiating teams of the two parties had agreed over 'Abaseen-Pakhtunkhwa as new name for the NWFP province, which was rejected by Nawaz at the last moment who suggested Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa instead. Had the NWFP (former) province been named 'Abaseen-Pakhtunkhwa, there would not have been much unrest in Hazara and the PML-N leadership from the region would also not have alienated their vote bank, revealed a key PML-N member seeking anonymity. It is to be noted that the word 'Abaseen also symbolises the whole region of Hazara, and it is believed that the sentiments of the people in Hazara could have been pacified to some extent had the province was renamed as Abaseen-Pakhtunkhwa. Talking to The Nation, Central Secretary General ANP Ehsan Wayne confirmed that his party had no objection to the name of Abaseen-Pakhtunkhwa. It was the PML-N leadership, which wanted the name Khyber to precede the word Pakhtunkhwa to which the ANP had also no objection. It also merits mentioning that the word Khyber does not represent the NWFP but the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), which is not under the control of provincial govt. The resultant situation has led to resignation by senior PML-N leader and former chief minister NWFP, Sardar Mehtab Khan Abbasi, who feared losing his vote bank. It has also provided an opportunity to the PML-N opponents to exploit the situation in their favour. The PML-N spokesperson, Pervaiz Rashid, was not available for comment when contacted.
