Cabinet reshuffle imminent

ISLAMABAD - After President Asif Ali Zardari returns from his upcoming China visit (August 21-24), a massive reshuffle in the federal cabinet is imminent wherein a few ministers are to be shown the door while others portfolios will be changed, TheNation learnt on Wednesday. According to the well-placed sources, to start with, the ministers against whom there are allegations of corruption, inefficiency and mismanagement would be replaced with new faces. Conspiracy theories including the so-called minus-1 formula, frictions between the President and the Prime Minister and image of ministers bad governance have forced the government to reshuffle the cabinet, the sources said. However, despite insistence by certain political quarters that the cabinet reshuffle would be delayed, some credible insiders disclosed the government had decided to take the 'big step before the end of holy month of Ramazan. Earlier, the official sources told The Nation that the closest circles of the PPP were busy these days in evaluating the performance of some ministries, basically aiming at the imminent cabinet reshuffle. The criterion for the ministers performance evaluation was based on the public image, such as corruption allegations, against a particular member of the cabinet, the sources added. The sources hinted that the cabinet members who were most likely to be shown the door included Minister for Investments Senator Waqar, Health Minister Ijaz Khan Jakharani and Minister for Industries Mian Manzoor Wattoo. Apart from the political accountability, the government was also compelled to reshuffle the cabinet in the backdrop of concerns conveyed by the armed forces about the corruption and political infighting, the sources said. According to the sources, the GHQ has told the government in so many words that the reports about the governments corruption and also about the frictions at the apex level were to down the moral of the troops fighting the militants.
