National interests paramount: Sherry

ISLAMABAD - Federal Information Minister Sherry Rehman has said that Pakistan itself is a primary target and victim of terrorism and government is undertaking its counter-terrorism agenda very seriously that is in the interests of country's own security. She expressed these views while talking to a delegation of the International Crisis Group (ICG) headed by its President Gareth Evans, which called on her at PTV Headquarters on Monday. Exchanging views on the regional situation in the wake of the Mumbai attacks, Sherry reiterated Pakistan's stance on terrorism and its commitment to international cooperation to jointly combat extremism and counter terrorism. "Pakistan has been consistent in its offer to India for cooperation and conducting joint investigations," said the Information Minister. "We have asked India repeatedly not to let Mumbai reverse the peace process, and our stance is supported by the international community. The world needs to understand the difficulties that the country is facing to hunt down and bring to justice perpetrators of Mumbai attacks and several other acts of terrorism that exclusively targeted Pakistan." Talking to media persons after the meeting, Sherry said both India and Pakistan need to resume their composite peace dialogue to jointly fight terrorism. "Events in Gaza have important lessons for both India and Pakistan. Gaza has shown us that war and violence cannot resolve contentious issues between two parties and there is no credible alternative for conflict resolution except a sustained peace process," said Sherry. She appreciated the ICG's policy research and advisory work. She said the ICG's numerous reports on Pakistan produced during the last few years had not only served to educate Pakistanis about the complex challenges faced by their country, but they also had immense value for policymakers who were tackling these challenges.
