APDM warns govt of civil disobedience

ISLAMABAD Reiterating its commitment to judicial independence and democracy in the country, All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) here on Thursday warned the government that if the alliance's demands were not fulfilled, the nation could be asked to observe civil disobedience. On the concluding day of the two-day National Conference, called by APDM, the alliance's convener Mehmood Khan Achakzai read 15-point declaration of demands in a crowded press conference. In the declaration, the APDM demanded immediate resignation by President Musharraf and restoration of deposed judiciary to November 2, 2007 position. "The unconstitutional acts of President Musharraf of November 3 must be abolished and military operation in Balochistan be halted at the earliest", says the declaration. Achakzai urged the government to conduct independent and transparent probe into the murder of Nawab Akbar Bugti, Balach Mari and the gory incidents of May 12, 2007 in Karachi. "The missing persons should be recovered and military operation in tribal territories be also halted immediately", said the APDM Convener. The alliance in its declaration also demanded reduction in Sales Tax and Capital Gains Tax and asked the government to control soaring inflation in the country.   The APDM in its unanimous declaration asked the government to continue giving subsidies on oil and other essential commodities. The APDM leaders alleged the government had turned its back towards Bhurban Accord and wanted to protect President Musharraf November 3, 2007 steps. Achakzai was accompanied by Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Imran Khan, Abdul Haye Baloch, Ibtisam Ilahi Zaheer and other central leaders of APDM constituent parties. Regarding Budget, he said that it was not a pro-poor budget as it would make poor people's life miserable. The APDM leaders objected to the government's move to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court of Pakistan through the Finance Bill, 2008-09. Replying to a question, Achakzai urged Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari to take practical steps and not to stop masses' movement. They held the previous government responsible for the ongoing crises in the country and noted that most of its decisions were against the country's interests. Responding to another query about renowned nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Qazi Hussain Ahmed said that DR AQ Khan was national hero and he must be immediately released, as it was a national disgrace to keep him under detention. The APDM central command observed that Long March was a mega success.
