Rabbani may resign after tabling draft

ISLAMABAD Strong opposition by Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan has prevented Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani from making Senator Mian Raza Rabbani his Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs and he was just made Advisor to Prime Minister. Sources in the ruling coalition Government informed TheNation that the tussle between Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan and Chairman of Constitutional Reforms Committee of the Parliament Senator Mian Raza Rabbani started when the former insisted that being the Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs he would table the draft proposal of 18th Constitutional Amendment before the Parliament. Senator Rabbani resisted it and he was also having the backing of all the members of the Constitutional Reforms Committee of the Parliament and Government was left with little choice but to succumb to the demand of Senator Rabbani who had not been having smooth sailing with the Government since he stepped down from the slot of Leader of the House in Senate in protest when Farooq H Naek was given the slot of Chairman Senate. Besides stepping down from the slot of Leader of the House in Senate, he had also tendered his resignation as federal minister for inter-provincial coordination, which was accepted a few days back to pave way for his nomination as Advisor to Prime Minister. The sources in the Government informed that initially it was decided to give him the portfolio of Advisor to PM on Parliamentary Affairs but as Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan had bitterly opposed the move, the Government was left with little choice but to make Advisor to Prime Minister. The sources in the Government informed that initially Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Awan wanted to present the draft of 18th Amendment before the National Assembly but as whole of the Constitutional Reforms Committee members were standing behind Senator Rabbani leaving little room for Government to think otherwise. The sources in the Government informed that Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani asked Senator Rabbani to present the draft of 18th Amendment before the Parliament in his capacity of Federal Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination as his resignation was not accepted but as he did not agree to it and his resignation was accepted to pave way for his making an advisor to PM. The sources in the Committee informed when one of the members of the committee had greeted Senator Mian Raza Rabbani for his notification as advisor to PM, he smiled and said that soon after the tabling of the draft of 18th Amendment he would also step down as Advisor to PM. However, it could not be confirmed from Mian Raza Rabbani as he was not picking his cell phone. However, another Parliamentarian close to Rabbani commenting on his intention to resign after tabling of the draft of 18th Amendment before the Parliament said that he (Rabbani) was the man of principles and one could expect this from him. He further said that for a person who had rejected the coveted slots of Leader of the House in Senate and Federal Minister for Inter-provincial Coordination on principles, the slot of Advisor to PM was not of much significance.
