Resolution submitted in Punjab Assembly

LAHORE-Following PML-N Quaids Mian Nawaz Sharifs statement that he was in favour of a separate province for south Punjab, the joint Opposition in Punjab Assembly on Thursday submitted a resolution in the Assembly Secretariat, demanding of the Federal government to take the necessary Constitutional steps for creation of new province in the region on administrative grounds. This is the fourth resolution coming from the PPP and PML-Q on the subject after the previous three were knocked out by the Speaker on 'technical grounds. But this time around, the Opposition is expecting that the resolution will be passed unanimously, as PML-N chief has publicly declared that he supported the demand for new province for South Punjab. 'We hope that PML-N legislators in Punjab Assembly will honour the words of their party chief Mian Nawaz Sharif and support the resolution, said Deputy Parliamentary Leader of PPP, Shaukat Mehmood Basra while talking to The Nation. The first resolution on new province was submitted by PML-Qs Chaudhry Zaheeruddin in 2009. It was followed by two more resolutions jointly moved by the Opposition in June 2010 and in August 2011. Now a fourth one has landed in the Assembly, but in a different context, as the Opposition wants to cash in on Mian Nawaz Sharifs recent statement made in DG. Khan in favour of its demand. 'This House is of the considered opinion that in order to make South Punjab a separate province on administrative grounds, the Federal government should be asked to take the necessary steps to make amendment in 1973 Constitution for the purpose, reads the resolution submitted by five Assembly members on Thursday. Talking to the media after submission of the resolution, PML-Q legislator Mohsin Leghari said that Mian Nawaz Sharif had endorsed the stance taken by the Opposition and people of South Punjab regarding a separate province. He said that a unanimous resolution by the Assembly would prove to be a gift for the people in South Punjab on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. Muhammad Yar Hiraj and Mian Shafi said that if the PML-N went against the statement of Mian Nawaz Sharif by opposing the resolution for the fourth time, people in South Punjab will welcome its leaders with 'tomatoes and eggs. It many be noted that Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Muhammad Iqbal had earlier rejected three similar resolutions on the plea that according to the Constitution, the process for creation of a new province should start from the Parliament and not from the province concerned.
