Karachi - As many as 16 persons were killed while another 35 got injured when a bomb blasted the Birch Club in Eidgha area Thursday evening, police said. According to the reports, the bomb exploded inside the compound, known as Birch Club, having the board The Birch Club located at the ground floor of Zahid Arcade, Jinnahabad, Lyari Quarters, Karachi. Following the blast, law enforcement agencies, rescuers of different organizations and bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot and shifted the dead bodies and injured to the different hospitals. According to the police, as many as 16 dead bodies and 28 injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi while some 13 injured were brought to the Lyari General Hospital while another seven wounded persons were rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center. Dr Lala Mubarak, Medico Legal Officer, Civil Hospital, confirmed the death toll at 16 and injuries to 35 others while termed eight injured highly critical. The club known as the den of Haji Ramzan, Ghas Mandi Club, was one of the main registered dens of gambling where scores of gamblers use to visit daily. DSP Uman Asghar of CID while talking to The Nation said that it was a planted device created a cater of around less than a feet deep and 2 feet wide. He ruled out the possibility of throwing hand-grenade and said that the device was lying inside the club and exploded with the help of remote or timer. He suspected the involvement of terrorist groups behind the blast and said that gang war operatives can be involved in such sort of attack. BDS official when asked about the nature of the blast said that it was the Improvised Explosive Device. He believes that the bomb carried around 2 kg explosive with pellets. It is pertinent to mention here that the club remains under the control of club administration and officials of law enforcement agencies were not even allowed to get their personal guards inside the compound of the club. No group or person has so far claimed responsibility of the blast.
