Assistance for IDPs improving: UN

UNITED NATIONS - Donors have stepped up contributions in the past week to the UNs fund for the relief and rehabilitation of the people displaced from Pakistans North-West following the anti-Taliban military operations, a UN spokesperson said Friday. Spokesperson Marie Okabe told a news briefing that the UNs appeal for the $542 million it had sought to meet the humanitarian needs of over two million IDPs was now more than 60 per cent funded. Meanwhile, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs(OCHA) said that almost 229,000 previously displaced families have now returned to their places of origin. As a result, 13 camps have closed down, although 17 still remain open in the North-West Frontier Province. In terms of what UN agencies are doing to help, the agency said UN-HABITAT and the UN Refugee Agency have pledged to provide shelter assistance to about 10,000 families whose homes were damaged. And the World Food Programme is distributing food in Waziristan.
