India test-fires supersonic cruise missile

NEW DELHI (APP) - India on Sunday test-fired a vertical-launch version of 290-km range BrahMos, a manoeuverable supersonic cruise missile from a warship INS Ranvir in the Bay of Bengal off the Orissa coast, it was officially said. The weapon system has been developed by the Indo-Russian joint venture company. BrahMos aerospace chief A Sivathanu Pillai said the missile was fired at 1130 hours and it successfully hit the target ship. He claimed that India has become the first and only country in the world to have a manoeuverable supersonic cruise missile in its arsenal. During the test, the missile hit a free-floating ship piercing it above the waterline and destroying it completely, officials said. The three Indian Navys Talwar class ships, being built in Russia have been fitted with vertical launchers. More ships will have this facility, officials said. India Navys Shivalik class frigates have been fitted with this missile system.
