2 'suicide bombers' nabbed in Karachi

KARACHI - Police said Thursday they had arrested two suspects from Al-Qaeda-linked extremist groups who were planning suicide attacks at different places in the metropolis. Talking to newsmen, SSP (Operations), Fayyaz Khan, said the police arrested the criminals and recovered an explosives-filled jacket, detonators and two hand grenades from them. On a tip off, a police party, led by Chaudhry Safdar, raided a place at Musharraf Colony and arrested accused Amjad Zameer Khattak alias Musarat alias Talha, son of Sadiq Zameer and a resident of Swat, and Mohammad Asim alias Tipu Sultan alias Babu, son of Mohammad Hakeem Khan of Nowshehra, after an encounter. However, their accomplices, Mohammad Safir alias Saifullah, Adnan and Abdul Hameed managed to escape from the scene. The arrested culprits allegedly belonged to the banned outfits, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Harkatul Mujahideen, respectively, SSP Fayyaz added. They were involved in terrorist activities in North West Frontier Province and North Waziristan, he said. During the interrogation, the arrested criminals confessed that they had been sent by Mutiur Rehman from North Waziristan to launch suicide attacks on police offices and imambargahs in Karachi, Khan said. The official claimed Mutiur Rehman alias Qari Ibrahim was the mastermind behind several suicide attacks across the country and was also wanted in the 2002 murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl. Ibrahim also carries a head money worth Rs 10 million.
