Senators call for body to probe into flood losses

ISLAMABAD The legislators in the Upper House of the Parliament on Tuesday called for formation of an impartial commission to probe into losses occurred due to alleged mismanagement of the Government during the flash floods in the country. Professor Khurshid Ahmed of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) proposed formation of the commission to probe into the flood losses occurred due to the 'mismanagement of the Government and politicians. Expressing his disappointment, he said that the country had no state-of-the-art equipment to monitor the flood situation. He said that the rulers had completely failed to tackle the situation emerged after the flash floods. Professor Khurshid said that the trust of the masses in the Government was at its lowest ebb due to the corrupt practices of the Government, as they were donating to NGOs instead of giving money to the Government. He also opposed the imposition of the new taxes to generate funs for rehabilitation of the flood victims, adding that the budget should be revised and restructured instead of introducing new taxes. Senator Muhammad Ali Durrani of PML-Q said that no administrative entity existed in the flood-hit areas due to the absence of the local bodies. The district administrations took very wrong decisions during the floods to save the lands of feudal lords that resulted in the loss of properties of the poor farmers, he said. He also endorsed the proposed formation of the commission to probe into the issue. He accused the local revenue officials of taking Rs 200 to 500 as bribe from people to enrol their names in the lists of flood affectees so that they could get compensation money through Watan Cards. Durrani also urged the Government to cut the size of the Federal Cabinet in the light of the 18th Amendment to save money for the rehabilitation of the flood-effected people. Earlier, Haji Ghulam Ali of Jamiat Ulma-e-Islam-Fazlur Rehman (JUI-F) moved a privilege motion against a local TV channel for broadcasting a news items with regard to arrest of his party chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Azam Khan Swati. He said that the channel broke the story that both of them had been stopped at Doha Airport on the directives of the US authorities in a bid to stop them from participating in the meeting of Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC). He termed the news item misleading, saying that his party chief and Azam Swati, both were present in the Monday s session of National Assembly and Senate respectively. The Chairman referred the motion to the Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privilege. The Upper House witnessed a great hue and cry when Senator Abbas Khan Afridi from the treasury benches termed the recent merger of PML-Q and PML-F unnatural, saying that the former belonged to the opposition while the latter was sitting on the treasury benches. He said that PML-Q should not deceive the nation, either it should sit on the treasury benches or PML-F should join the opposition. Senator Humyun Khan, on the point of order, said that the Government should address the issue of shortage of petrol in the different parts of the country. The proceedings of the House were adjourned till 4pm, Wednesday.
