SC seeks IIC, Ramday views

ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Court on Monday sought the opinion from Islamic Ideology Council (IIC) and Justice (Retd) Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday regarding how the registration of children with unknown parentage was possible under Islamic Shariah. A two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Justice Ghulam Rabbani was hearing an application filed by Abdul Sattar Edhi for legal opinion for the registration of children with unknown parentage. During the course of hearing, the bench has observed that a strategy should be devised to register thousands of children whose parentage was unknown, so that they could become responsible citizens. Edhi prayed to the SC to pass a verdict so the children of unknown parentage issue might be resolved by giving them an identity with respect and honour. In his letter, Abdul Sattar Edhi has stated that her daughter Kubra went to National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) office to acquire registration of a minor child where the official informed her that without guardian no registration could be processed. According to the Nadra the issue of naming parentage of abandoned children is a sensitive religious matter and in order to sort out this issue, the Nadra has also sought fatwa from Shiite and Sunni scholars in Iran and Saudi Arabia respectively along with referring the case to the Islamic Ideology Council (IIC), which opined, No specific name could be given. This will create tension for the minors hence any name may be mentioned in parentage. If the guardians name is known then name of guardian may be written. The court adjourned the hearing for three weeks.
