Senate united to condemn Israeli aggression

ISLAMABAD " The Upper House of the Parliament Friday strongly denounced Israeli aggression on Gaza as it passed unanimous resolution against the massacre of innocent Palestinians at the hands of the Zionist State. The resolution termed brutal killing of armless Gazans as state terrorism and a violation of the UN charter and Geneva Convention as well as humanitarian laws. The resolution, read out by Leader of the House in Senate Mian Raza Rabbani, said that Israeli air and ground strikes on Gaza resulted in thousands of civilian casualties and destruction of property. The resolution expressed deep concern over the inability of international community to stop Israeli assaults on innocent Palestinians and urged the major powers of the world including influential Arab States to take effective actions to prevent Israel from exercising the brutal power in future. It also urged the US and the international community to use their influence for putting an end to Israeli atrocities against the helpless Palestinians and safeguarding their rights including the right to live. The resolution also expressed solidarity with Palestinians in their just struggle for establishment of an independent state with Al-Quds as its capital. While debating on the resolution, Senators from both sides of the political divide expressed their deep concern over the plight of innocent civilians at the hands of Israel. Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed termed the Israeli attacks on Gaza as state terrorism against Palestinian people struggling for their right of self-determination. He attached great hopes with the new US administration for resolution of the longstanding issues of Kashmir and Palestine, which he said would better bridge the gulf between the Muslim world and the United States. He also called for an end to the double standard demonstrated by the international community over problems faced by Muslim Ummah and other religions. Professor Khurshid Ahmed said that persistent silence of Muslim States over genocide of Palestinians meant that they too were involved in the massacre. He hoped the new US administration would review the policies of the previous regime regarding blind support of the Zionist State. Senator Ishaq Dar said that the biased policies of US administration and atrocities against Muslim Ummah were the root causes of terrorism, adding that without addressing the same, the so-called war on terror couldn't be won. He said British Foreign Secretary David Miliband had rightly diagnosed causes of unrest in Muslims of the subcontinent, and 'same is the case with Palestinians', he said. Senator Abdur Rahim Mandokhel, besides condemning Israeli aggression, criticized the government for military operation in Swat Valley. Senator Abdul Ghafoor Haidri deplored silence of world community and Muslim States over the continuous atrocities of Israel. It is high time that the international community played their due role in resolving chronic problems faced by the Ummah so that a better state of peace was ensured in the world. Meanwhile, Minister for Law and Justice, Farooq H Naek tabled three ordinances in the Upper House. The ordinances included the National Vocational and Technical Education Commission Ordinance, 2008, the Legal Practitioners and Bar Councils (Amendment) Ordinance, 2008 and the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Ordinance, 2008. However, Prof Khurshid Ahmad, Ishaq Dar and Ilyas Bilour bitterly criticized legislating through ordinances, saying the practice didn't suit a democratic government. They demanded that constitutional bills be presented before the House instead. Responding to the Senators, Leader of the House in Senate, Raza Rabbani assured that corresponding bills would be tabled in the House within a period of four months. "We don't depend on ordinances and believe in proper process of legislation", Rabbani said. Moreover, Senator Tariq Azeem, on a point of order, said that the government, in a letter to the IMF, had admitted that policies of the previous government were best for the economic uplift of the country. Leader of the House, however, said that the letter seemed to be written by some bureaucrat loyal to the previous regime and that the previous government had ruined the country's economy. Senator Kalsoom Parveen pointed out that Rs 20 billion from Port Qasim's account had been kept in a bank on 0% interest. She demanded that the official responsible be punished according to the law.
