SC asks FBR to submit report

ISLAMABAD The Supreme Court on Thursday directed Member Customs Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to file a comprehensive report about challans and cases filed in the courts during the last one year with regard to Customs rules and regulations violation. The court also directed anchorperson of a private TV channel, Dr Moeed Pirzada to appear before the court along with the transcripts of one of his programmes, in which it has been mentioned that over 10,000 ISAF containers went missing on way from Karachi. A three-member bench of the apex court comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Tariq Parvez and Justice Ghulam Rabbani was hearing the bail application of driver of container loaded with foreign liquor bottles as well as suo moto case of missing of 10,000 ISAF containers. The court directed Munir Qureshi, Member Customs to file report on the challans, so far filed by the Customs regarding violation of Customs rules and regulation and adjourned the hearing till September 29. Raja Muhammad Irshad, counsel for Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), appeared before the court and submitted a detailed report on Afghan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA). He remarked, Its true that the containers held by Islamabad police at Tarnol carried contraband items and that the Customs officials without physical examination gave clearance. He said, however, they have suspended three officials, who were accused of negligence. During hearing, the Chief Justice said that smuggled goods were openly sold out in the markets of Rawalpindi and Islamabad and nobody was checking them. Just go to the markets in Blue Area, you will find huge smuggled goods there, he asked Munir Qureshi. Munir replied that the provincial Government should be directed to cooperate with the Customs officials. There is a sitting Government and why dont you ask the Government to pass order in this regard. It seems you people have made the country a free port, the Chief Justice observed. He added that the Customs authorities should perform its obligation honestly. He said that the court would send this case to some agency for thorough investigation. Chairman Federal Board of Revenue, Sohail Ahmed, who was also present in the court said; We are ready for third party investigation in the case. The case was adjourned for September 29.
