Riots in Karachi as 6 more killed

KARACHI - Six people, including an MQM woman activist, were killed and several others were injured in riots across the City during the last 24 hours. Tension spread on Friday when an activist of Pukhtoon Students Organisation (PSF) was targeted in the downtown of the City, sparking off riots in various areas of the City, including Sadder, Lee Market, Kharader, Banaras Colony, Shah Faisal Colony, Orangi Town and Azizabad. Armed motorcyclists defied ban on pillion-riding and continued to resort to firing, creating panic among the Karachiites. After the killing of Sohail Khattak on Friday, another activist of Awami National Party (ANP) was killed at KDA Chowrangi, Nazimabad. The second victim of the ongoing violence was Zafar Khan, owner of the Bolan Hotel, Hussainabad, Azizabad who was targeted by unknown motorcyclists at his shop. Another person, Gul Muhammad, was injured in the same area. The third victim of the violence was Gul Badin who was shot dead here in the limits of Pirabad police station by unknown armed assailants. Two passers-by - Salman and Nazim Ali - were also injured in firing near Abdullah College, North Nazimabad while Mahir, 23, was wounded at MA Jinnah Road. Firing in various areas continued while miscreants set ablaze two shops at Jinnah Square, Malir, two buses at Shah Faisal Colony, a carpet shop at Colony Gate and number of pushcarts in Nazimabad. Heavy contingents of police and Rangers were seen patrolling in the violence-hit areas while firing between the rival groups continued, bringing business and routine life to a standstill. The traffic was very thin across the City and the main markets were partially closed. Police have failed to arrest any of the culprits involved in the killings and riots. A source said the Rangers, during routine checking at Sohrab Goth, searched a car (AJK-802) and recovered a pistol, 68 bullets of SMG and a number of 9mm bullets. The FIR against arrested men was to be registered till the filing of this report. Arrested men were identified as Asif Mehsud and Jamil Mehsud, workers of a political party. It is pertinent to mention here that the Sindh government has also banned flag-hoisting and wall-chalking across the City while ban on public gathering and pillion-riding was imposed on Friday. PPI adds: A sympathiser of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) women wing, Rizwana Masood, was killed while her two daughters, 17-year-old Mehwish and eight-year-old Kehkshaan, received serious injuries when unknown gunmen restored to indiscriminate firing on a bus at Orangi Town in the jurisdiction of Pirabad police station limits on late-night Friday. The victim belonged to MQM, the duty officer of the Pirabad police station said, adding she was not the target of gunmen but she only fell prey to firing by the armed men. Two real brothers, Sardar Alam and Azizur Rahman, sons of Naoroz Khan, were shot dead while their other brother Saeed Alam, received serious bullet injuries, at Banaras Colony in the jurisdiction of Pirabad Police station limits. Two students - Nazim Ali and Salman of PSF - sustained serious bullet injuries when unidentified gunmen opened fired on them near Abdullah College roundabout. OUR MONITORING DESK adds: Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfikar Ali Mirza chaired a high-level meeting at Central Police Office and reviewed the steps taken for the security of life and property of people by police and other law enforcement agencies. The meeting was attended by Secretary Home, DG Rangers, IG Sindh, CCPO Karachi, Additional IG Special Branch, DIG CID besides DIGs East, South and West and officials of secret agencies. He directed that the ban on carrying of arms and their demonstration and enforcement of Section 144 be ensured and strict action be taken against elements involved in their violations. He said police officials and personnel in plain clothes, too, should avoid carrying arms. Home Minister called upon the police officers to take all possible steps for supremacy and enforcement of law while remaining impartial. He pointed out that it is the basic obligation of police and other law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order and protect the life and property of peaceful citizens. In his directives to IG Police, Dr Zulfikar asked all SHOs to street patrolling and arrest mischievous elements and suspects. He directed that elements involved in criminal activities should not be spared and there should be no hesitation in taking timely legal action against them. Dr Zulfikar issued instructions for formation of special teams for the purpose of investigating the major incidents of target killings and Taisar Town incident and said elements involved therein be brought to book.
