Balochistan Assembly passes budget

QUETTA - Balochistan Assembly on Thursday unanimously approved provincial budget for next fiscal year 2009-10. Assembly session was held under the chairmanship of Speaker Muhammad Aslam Bhootani. Provincial Minister for Finance Mir Asim Kurd moved 50 demands to the tune of over Rs 69.69 billion in the House. Non-development expenditures have been estimated at Rs 51.16 billion while Rs 18.53 billion have been allocated for development expenditures. Earlier, concluding the general debate on next years financial budget, Balochistans Finance Minister Mir Asim Kurd Gailo announced 20 per cent raise in salaries of government employees from grade 1 to 16. He said Balochistan was facing serious financial problems and every year federal government was asked for financial assistance to prepare budget. He said that Balochistan had been deprived of revenues generated from its mineral resources. However provincial government had taken up the issue with federal government, he said. He supported the proposal of women MPAs to establish a separate ministry for the welfare of women and assured that all efforts would be made for the well-being of women. Gailo said in budget of fiscal year 2009-10 education, health and agriculture sectors had been given more attention, which would bring positive changes in the province. He said government had decided to earmark more resources to law enforcement agencies in order to ensure security of the people and added law enforcement agencies would be equipped with all modern facilities. He said federal government should redress the injustices perpetrated by previous governments towards Balochistan and increase its share in Reko Dik, Saindak and other projects. Sarwar Mussa Khail, Ali Madad Jattak, Rahila Durrani, Doctor Fozia Marri and others in their proposals said that government should ensure health facilities for people in Balochistan. They said that billions of rupees were spent on Bolan Medical Complex Hospital but it lacked health facilities and patients were facing difficulties. They also gave proposals to improve education and ensuring availability of teachers and schools in less developed districts.
