CJ gives deadline to Punjab govt

ISLAMABAD - A full bench of Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Wednesday gave a three-day deadline to the Government of Punjab for regularizing 96 ad hoc lecturers and submit a compliance report to the court. The Provincial Government despite a clear court ruling terminated services of these ad hoc lecturers. Disposing of the appeals of the Punjab Government against the court order for regularization of these lecturers, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry warned the authorities that in case the court orders were not implemented in letter and in spirit, heavy fine would be imposed on the Provincial Government. Earlier, Assistant Advocate General (AAG) Punjab Muddasir Khalid Abbasi appeared before the court on behalf of Provincial Government and sought permission for withdrawal of appeals but his request was turned down. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry asked the counsel whether the Punjab Government wanted these people (lecturers) to come on street for seeking implementation on the court orders regarding regularization of their services. "We will not allow you to withdraw the petition", Chief Justice of Pakistan made it clear while expressing his annoyance over a seven-year long delay in implementation of the court orders in the case. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry also asked as to who was responsible for the stress and agony of the affected lecturers. He directed the Provincial Government to clear the arrears of these lecturers and ensure their regularization within the next three days. These 96 ad hoc lecturers were removed from service by the Punjab Government in 2001. The aggrieved lecturers had moved the apex court in year 2002 against their removal which directed the Provincial Government to regularize all the sacked lecturers. The Punjab Government filed a review appeal against the same order instead of implementing it and managed to drag the legal controversy for years. Lately, the Punjab Government had also advertised vacancies against the seats of these ad hoc lecturers.
