Population and housing census in October

KARACHI (APP) - The Sixth Population and Housing Census will be conducted in the country in October this year. The Chief Census Commissioner of Pakistan, Khizar Hayat Khan stated this here on Thursday, while presiding over a workshop on Census 2010 at a local hotel. Khizar further said that the house listing would be carried out next month. He informed that this house count would be carried out with a work force on 175,000 consisting mainly of the school teachers etc and the task would be completed in 15 to 18 days time. The Census Commissioner said that the result of this would be compiled in two months and that this would give some clear idea regarding the actual population in the country. He pointed out that the previous census in the country was conducted in the year 1998 and that the figures that were then obtained have now become 'obsolete. Khizar also highlighted the important role of the respondents in the census exercise, as the correct answers on their part would help ensure a fair and credible exercise. He urged them to fully cooperate towards the conduct of the population census. Speaking on the occasion, the Sindh Secretary Local Government Department, Khurshid Naeem Malik, said that the population and housing census plays an essential role in public administration and that the results of this exercise were used as a critical reference to ensure equity in distribution of wealth, government services and nation-wide distributing and allocating government funds among various districts and regions. He stated that the Population Census Organisation has started consultations with provincial governments for all stages of census planning. Khurshid pointed out that the District Coordination Officers (DCOs) at the administrative districts and Deputy District Officers (Revenue) at tehsil level have to play a pivotal role as they are going to be responsible for the conduct and completion of census in their respective areas. On behalf of the provincial government he assured the Population Census Organisation for extending full cooperation in the conduct of transparent and reliable census in the province.
