Camps set up for IDPs dismantled

KARACHI- Strike call given by Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (Areesar) against the entry of Internally Displace People (IDPs) of Swat and Malakand, backed by nationalist parties got mixed reaction here on Monday. Partial strike was observed in the Karachi city while routine business activities remained completely suspended in different towns and districts of the interior Sindh. Traffic in the city was scant on main thoroughfares like M.A Jinnah Road, Shahra-e-Faisal, I.I Chundrigar Road and Shaheed-e-Millat Road in the morning but it resumed business later in the day. Public educational institutions remained closed and scheduled examinations of the Karachi Board and University of Karachi were postponed. Completed shutter-down was observed in Saddar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Malir, Landhi, Qauidabad, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Khokhrapara, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Bilal Colony, North Nizimabad, Liaquatabad, Scahal Goth, Federal B Area, Tariq Road in the early morning. However, traders started opening their sops in the afternoon and economic activities picked up later in the day. Attendance was thin at public and private offices because most of the citizens preferred to remain indoors. To maintain law and order situation, security was beefed up in the city and a large number of police and Rangers were seen patrolling on main thoroughfares and other sensitive areas. Intermittent incidents of firing were also reported late Sunday night in Shah Faisal, Malir and other areas. Meanwhile, some unidentified persons set a wagon on fire in Bilal Colony, Korangi, in the early hours of Monday. The strike was not as affective on Monday as it was on Saturday when another faction of JSQM (Bashir Group) had given the call for same reasons. MQM had disassociated itself from Mondays shutter-down. The violence seen on Saturday was missing on Monday. On Saturday unfortunately a number of persons were either killed or hurt when miscreants torched vehicles. The announcement of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah at a media briefing on Sunday that all the IDPs would be registered and kept in camps located far from the towns and cities also had positive impact. It cooled down the emotions and feelings of the protestors. MQMs decision to keep itself away from agitation on Monday also had its impact particularly in Karachi where the shutter down was minimum. However, shops remained closed in areas where the JSQM (Arisar) had some influence. According to sources, the MQM decided to distance itself from the strike following the late night negotiations with the provincial government. Considerable transport, both public and private, was also seen on the roads. Although the officials of transport association had announced to observe strike yet a good number of busses was seen plying on the roads. There was an uneasy calm on the roads and some densely populated areas. The situation however eased out later in the day. The administrations of public and private schools had decided to keep their institutions closed to avoid any untoward situation. Meanwhile our correspondents from Mirpurkhas, Shikarpur, Khairpur, Sukkur, Hyderabad, Badin, Naushehro Feroze, Jacobabad, Umerkot and other towns of Sindh reported complete shutter-down in those areas. IN MIRUPRKHAS, all business activities remained suspended on the call of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz JSQM (Arisar group) to protest against the entry of IDPs in Sindh province. Shops in all major markets, bazaars, shopping centres at M A Jinnah Road, Mirwah Road, Sir Syed Road, Gharibabad, Lalchandabad, Umerkot Road, Jameel Shaheed Road, Iqbal Road and others remained closed while traffic was thin at important thoroughfares. Petrol pumps and CNG stations also remained closed in the city. As a result, people had to face hardships to get fuel for their vehicles. Strict security arrangements were made on this occasion to avert any untoward incident as police personnel were deployed at main roads, chowks, sensitive buildings, entry and exit ways of the city. Several motorcyclists were detained for violating the ban of pillion riding. District Press secretary JSQM Mirpurkhas (Arisar group) alleged that police had arrested about eleven workers of his party from Kot Ghulam Mohammad, Mirpurkhas and Digri. Talking to newsmen, JSQM leader, Abdul Wahid Arisar, said that MQM had also supported the strike call as business activities in the MQM-dominated areas across the province remained closed on Monday. LARKANA: A complete strike was observed in Larkana on the call of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM) Arisar Group against the influx of internally displaced people from Swat and Malakand into the Sindh province. Main markets and bazaars in the city remained completely closed and traffic was thin on roads. Three cracker blasts at Square Bank, Pakistan Chowk and Station Road in Larkana were also heard which created panic among the local citizens. The heavy police and rangers were deployed at various sensitive places to maintain law and order. SUKKUR: Complete shutter down strike was observed in Sukkur and Ghotki in protest against arrival of Swat affectees in Sindh. In Sukkur city, all bazaars including Frere Road, Shahi Bazaar, Sarafa Bazaar, wholesale cloth market, Nishtar Road, Marich Bazaar, Gharibabad, Old Sukkur and all shopping centres remained completely closed throughout the day. In some areas, activists of nationalist parties forcibly closed the shops. Unknown miscreants resorted to aerial fire in Dhak Road and Frere Road areas. However, no untoward incident was reported due to tight security arrangements on this occasion. NAWABSHAH: Complete shutter-down strike was observed in district Nawabshah and all business and trade activities remained suspended in the city. BADIN: In Badin and its surrounding areas, people observed complete strike on the call of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (Arisar Group). Angry supporters of JSQM (Arisar Group) in Badin, Golarchi, Matli, Tando Bago, Talhar, Nindo, Kadhan, Tando Ghulam Ali, Pangrio and other towns burn tyres on roads. They strongly condemned the settlement of internal displaced people of Swat, Mangora and Malakand in Sindh. NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: Naushahro Feroze, Moro, Bhiria, Kandiaro, Mehrab Pur, Padidan and other towns of the district also observed complete strike on Monday. Meanwhile, routine life and business activities also remained suspended in Jamshoro, Kotri, Dadu, and other parts of the interior Sindh. Our Monitoring Desk adds: In the presence of police and Rangers officials, the authorities concerned have dismantled almost 150 camps set-up at the Karachi Super Highways to accommodate Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of Malakand, reported BBC on Monday. DSP Muhammad Iftikhar however, explained that the camps had been removed because of non-availability of water and other facilities. He denied having taken the step under any pressure. It is to be recalled that Sindh government had repeatedly declared that the IDPs would be settled in these camps. According to the sources concerned, the camps have been removed because they were located at a deserted locality, which caused apprehension about the law and order situation. On the other side, the Sindh National Front (SNF) has strongly resented the settlement of the IDPs of Malakand in Sindh. In a statement issued, the SNF asserted that it would launch a massive campaign against settlement of the IDPs in the province. In this connection, the SNF plans to organise a rally at the Sachal Sarmasts shrine in District Khairpur today (Tuesday).
