Courts keep govt under constitutional norms: Iftikhar

WASHINGTON (Online) - Deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday underlined that the basic purpose of courts is to safeguard the rights of masses and ensure that the government is working under constitutional norms. He expressed these views while addressing a ceremony held in Georgetown University in Washington. Iftikhar was of the view that 3rd November, 2007 was a black day in the history of judiciary as a dictator imposed martial law. He further said that the main aim of courts is to provide smooth justice to masses, maintaining that without independent courts, country's affairs cannot be run properly. The courts guarantee that government is working under constitutional norms, he pointed out. While addressing in the ceremony, CJ spokesman said that Pervez Musharraf's gift to the nation NRO can be challenged in the Court. Earlier, a warm welcome was accorded to Iftikhar Chaudhry on his arrival to the University.
