Steps taken to conserve energy; pending cases to be expedited

ISLAMABAD(Online)-A Full Court meeting was held on Monday in the Supreme Court under the Chairmanship of the Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry which discussed several issues including two holidays in week, efficiency of Advocates-On-Record (AORs) and reviewed the pendency of the cases for last one year and discussed means to expedite processing of the cases. In the full court meeting, the issue of two holidays in a week as approved by the govt was discussed in detail and it was resolved that Court is already working for five days in a week and one day i.e. Saturday is reserved for writing judgments. However, measures proposed by the Government have been immediately implemented to save energy. The Full Court was informed that by taking the energy saving measures a substantial amount of Rs 0.6 million per month could be saved. The monthly bill of the electricity consumed in Supreme Court is about 1.8 million ,therefore, by putting in place the measures the bill will be reduced by 35 per cent. The Full Court meeting reviewed the pendency of the cases for last one year and discussed ways and means to expedite processing and disposal of the same so as to facilitate litigants as well as lawyers. The Full Court took cognizance of the fact that certain conflicting judgments pronounced by superior courts need to be reconciled for smooth functioning of the Court. The meeting developed a consensus over the issue and resolved that homework is to be done on such issues in consultation with eminent lawyers. The consolidated data in this regard is to be put up before Larger Bench for final decision. The performance and efficiency of Advocates-On-Record (AORs) was also discussed in the meeting. It was decided that the Supreme Court Bar Associations might be consulted in order to facilitate the performance and output of the AORs. The Chief Justice also directed that no new enrolment of AORs should be done in the Supreme Court except the cases of extreme hardship. The CJP intimated the meeting that the process of conferring the status of 'Senior Advocate to the learned Advocates of Supreme Court is being streamlined. It was decided that all relevant persons and stakeholders should be consulted to firm up the names of learned senior lawyers to be considered for conferring the status of 'Senior Advocates to them. On the point of Justice Jawad S. Khawaja, the CJP informed the meeting that this is going to be last meeting of Justice Ch.Ijaz Ahmed as he is retiring on May 4th, 2010. All the judges of the SC and the Chief Justice of Pakistan commended the performance and contribution of Justice Ch. Ejaz Ahmed for his life long association with the institution of apex court of Pakistan.
