Step-by-step approach sought

NEW DELHI - Indias Minister for External Affairs SM Krishna said on Wednesday that his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshis proposed visit to India during the next couple of months would help improve relations between the two countries. Krishna stated this while talking to a delegation of journalists from Pakistan at a local hotel. 'With Pakistan, we stand ready to resolve all outstanding issues through a peaceful dialogue, he said. He supported step-by-step approach for resolving the issue. 'However, we expect Pakistan to fulfil its repeated assurances given to us at the highest level not to allow the territory under its control for fomenting terrorism aimed against us, and to bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai terrorist attack to justice expeditiously, he added. Krishna said 'terrorism was the biggest concern for India and urged Pakistan to uproot what he called terrorist havens from its territory. 'We have been victims of the most vicious kind of cross-border terror for over two decades. It continues to be used against us as a political and economic weapon, he said. He said India was well aware of the situation that Pakistan was passing through and sympathised to the people and government of Pakistan against loss of lives during terrorist attacks. Krishna said people in both countries wanted to be at peace with each other as they had many things common including culture and history. He rejected the impression that his previous meeting with Qureshi in Islamabad had failed due to lack of proper groundwork by the officials of the two countries. Regarding expected meeting with Qureshi, Krishna said India would like to engage Pakistan to sort out all of the outstanding issues to establish prime relationship between the two countries. 'We would like to engage Pakistan in a dialogue and there is no alternative to talks, he said.
