MIRPUR (AJK) - President of Pakistan Peoples Party (AJK chapter) Ch Abdul Majeed was elected as Prime Minister of Azad Jammu & Kashmir on Tuesday. The newly-elected AJK Legislative Assembly which met in Muzaffarabad elected Majeed as Prime Minister of AJK. Thus the seasoned politician holds the distinction of becoming the 11th Prime Minister of Azad Jammu & Kashmir in the parliamentary history of the state. Majeed bagged 35 votes against 11 secured by his only rival Raja Farooq Haider Khan, the PML-N candidate for the slot. The newly elected 47 lawmakers participated in the voting in the 49-seat AJK Legislative Assembly, according to the reports. It may be added that PML-Ns Raja Farooq had won two seats from separate constituencies of Muzaffarabad district in the June 26 AJK polls. Election to another seat in the constituency LA-37 (meant for Pakistan-based Kashmiri refugees dwelling in Lahore) has been postponed and is yet to be held. The legislators who voted for Majeed belonged to the PPP and the All Jammu Kashmir Muslim Conference, the outgoing ruling party in the state. The outgoing Prime Minister Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan felicitated the newly elected Premier Abdul Majeed on his victory. Staff Reporter from Islamabad adds: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has congratulated Ch Abdul Majeed on his election as Prime Minister of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. In his message of felicitation, Gilani hoped that the AJK Premier would work selflessly for the well-being of the Kashmiri people regardless of their political affiliations. He urged the AJK Premier to follow the policy of reconciliation of the Pakistan Peoples Party and take all political parties on board on matters of public importance.
