Zardari pleads SC for early hearing of ZAB reference

ISLAMABAD - President Asif Ali Zardari in a letter to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has requested him for early hearing of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto reference case which is pending in the apex court since June last. Confirming that a letter was written to CJP, Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said that President Zardari wanted early hearing of the reference. The reference, which was filed under Article 186 of the Constitution in April last, was taken up for hearing. But, after June last, the apex court has not taken up the case for hearing again due to other pressing engagements. Although the presidential spokesman did not divulge details of the letter written by President to Chief Justice of Pakistan the sources in the Presidency informed that President Zardari had raised some questions and reminded the court that the reference was of utmost importance and it should be taken up for hearing on priority basis at some early date. The President said in the letter he had raised certain questions, besides informing about the details of Bhutto murder through the reference. It was aimed at providing guidance to the court, the President added. The murder of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was an ugly spot on the fair face of judiciary and history of Pakistan. The need is there that this spot be washed. Sources said the President had also referred to some Quranic verses in the letter and requested the CJP to restart hearing of this reference soon. Some insiders in the party informed TheNation that the letter was aimed at exerting pressure on the apex court following its verdict in NRO Review Petition wherein the Federations plea was altogether rejected. Some political observers were of the view that President Zardari and his close aides were attempting to make the apex court controversial and that was the reason they were pushing for early hearing on the retrial of Zulfikar Ali Bhuttos hanging. These political observers were anticipating heightening tension between the government and apex judiciary in days to come and PPP leadership would likely play with non-issues only to make the issue of writing letter to Swiss authorities for reopening of the cases against President Zardari and others in Switzerland controversial.
