ISLAMABAD (APP) National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Thursday said that expected time of overflow of Hunza Attabad lake is likely between May 28-29 next. A statement of NDMA, due to safety considerations measurement of free board has been stopped from May 24 onwards, approximate free board is 4 feet. Expected time of overflow is likely between May 28-29, the statement added. Giving details of the displaced families / individuals, the NDMA said that 141 families (1652 individuals) of village Attabad and Sarat got displaced in the wake of land-sliding on January 4. It added that they need complete rehabilitation of land, housing and livelihood cash grant. The NDMA further said that due to Inundation, following have been displaced due to inundation (starting from January 10, onwards till date). The NDMA said that due to blockage of access roads, all the valleys upstream of the lake, to include Shimshal, Sust, Chupurson and Misghar, where no damage has occurred, but people are suffering due to no economic activity and non availability of items of daily sustenance. Regarding the displacement as a safety measure, it said that evacuation of endangered population from District Hunza and Gilgit has been completed. Their belongings are intact and safe however the damage can only be ascertained after the overflow of water from the lake. Evacuation of threatened areas against sudden breach of water completed, the NDMA said. It added that Army troops have been deployed in Hunza, Gilgit and Chillas to assist civil administration. Helicopters placed at Gilgit for relief operation. 137 helicopter sorties flown from May 20-26 and transported 1952 passengers and 16.3 tons of food/fuel/ medicines, it added. It said that Army Engineer Corps and FWO made responsible for maintenance of bridges and KKH respectively. Installation of ropeways at Ganesh, Hini, Tishyot, Khanabad and Shayan Nagar has been completed. Regarding sustenance of population through provision of food and medicines, the NDMA said that Prime Minister has announced a package on May 26. Under the package Rs 200,000 per household will be given to all those who have lost their land. Similarly Rs 400,000 for completely damaged house and Rs 160,000 for partially damaged house will be provided. Livelihood cash grant of Rs 5000 per family per month for six months will be granted to those who have lost their houses to free them form livelihood concerns and allowing focus on construction of their houses, the NDMA said. Wheat and flour dumped by the Gilgit Baltistan (GB) Government in Upper Hunza will be distributed free of cost to the affected population for two months in accordance with the existing scales. Additionally Rs 100,000 will be allotted to 171 submerged house owners of Ainabad, Shishkat and Gulmit by Pakistan Baitul Maal. Utility Stores Corporation will establish sale points at Gulmit and Sust immediately. The GB Govt has been directed to establish an education assistance fund to finance the students studying outside GB for two semesters.
