Bilawal to lead Zardari tribe

ISLAMABAD - President and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has decided to forego the title of the Zardari tribe chief and pass on the mantle of tribe leadership to his son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Presidential Spokesperson Farhatullah Babar stated this to media while responding to questions regarding the future leadership of the Zardari tribe after the death of former chief of the tribe, Hakim Ali Zardari, father of President Asif Ali Zardari. He explained that according to the Zardari tribal tradition consequent upon the death of the tribal chief his eldest son takes over as head of the tribe. The transition to new tribal leadership is formalised in a customary gathering of the tribal elders called 'dastar bandi that is held on or soon after the Soyem, the third day to the death the tribes chief. He said that according to this tradition, after the deathof Hakim Ali Zardari his son Asif Ali Zardari is to become the chief of his tribe. However, President Zardari has decided not to become the chief himself rather pass on the largely ceremonial title to his son and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Formal ceremony of 'dastar bandi to herald Bilawal as chief of the Zardari tribe has been put off till such time when the overall conditions in the country are more conducive and the holding of such tribal ceremonies do not appear insensitive, Farhatullah Babar added. The president has advised to withhold customary tribal ceremonies that are also usually accompanied with a measure of fanfare, he said.
