Can Rehman Malik just rein in MQM?

ISLAMABAD President Asif Ali Zardari, who has been successful in securing a temporary ceasefire with the estranged coalition partner MQM, has tasked Interior Minister Rehman Malik to keep the important ally on board, TheNation reliably learnt Friday. Sources close to the Minister said that Rehman Malik, who is one of the most trusted arms of the President, might soon visit London to meet MQM Quaid Altaf Hussain to remove misgivings that had developed between the two important political allies over the NRO issue as well as the remarks made by Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza. The sources were of the view that Rehman Malik, deputed by the party Co-Chairman and President Asif Ali Zardari for wheeling dealing with top MQM leadership, is set again to keep the estranged MQM in the coalition fold. Rehman Malik is the only person perhaps in the Federal Cabinet the MQM feels threatened of his typical mischief, a source said adding he may continue as cabinet member with the same portfolio. Contrary to these claims, there has been tremendous pressure on President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani for Rehman Maliks removal, and his opponents within the federal cabinet and party seem upbeat about his replacement in the Federal Cabinet as result of reshuffle expected after Eid.
