Economic stability govt's top priority, says Gilani

KARACHI - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that economic stability was the top priority of the present government and it was basic reason which compelled the his regime to take some unpopular decisions including withdrawal of subsidies. "The law and order and economy were interlinked and the government was trying to restore writ of the state at all costs, he said. Speaking at an Iftar party at the Governor's House here on Saturday, the Prime Minister said that he arrived in the city to meet representatives of the business community and take them into confidence about the decisions taken by the govt to boost economy and root out terrorism and extremism from the country. He said that for the betterment of economy, government has evolved privatisation policy and exploring new vistas. He added that terrorism and extremism were harming economic and political stability of the country that was why the government was trying to root out this menace with the support of people. "The government has adopted a three-pronged policy and wanted to encourage political dialogue in order to isolate militants and encourage them to join mainstream politics where they could contribute towards the welfare and development of the society", the PMobserved.    He said that in February 18 elections, people had voted for the change of system and the government was trying to come up to the expectations of the masses. "We are striving hard for broad-based government both at centre and the provinces for economic and political stability in the country", he said, adding that keeping in view the expectations of business community, a coalition government of PPP-MQM was formed in Sindh. Gilani termed the Parliament as the supreme body regarding 17th Amendment and 58(2)b and said that balance between the discretionary powers of President and Prime Minister in this connection was inevitable. Earlier, Sindh Governor Dr. Ishratul Ebad Khan welcomed the Prime Minister, Sindh Chief Minister, Governor State Bank, Speaker Sindh Assembly, federal and provincial ministers and representatives of business community on his arrival for t6he iftar party.
