Islamabad for restoration of peace process with Delhi

ISLAMABAD " Resolving to defend the country at any cost, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani Monday met to evolve a strategy for defusing the tension with India to restore the suspended peace process with the nuclear rival. According to well-placed sources, the President and the Prime Minister took stock of other issues, as well, confronting the PPP government including reported frictions between two of them, and their coalition in Punjab with the central opposition party PML-N fast losing the grounds. "Our resolve to defend the country and our desires to have peace with all neighbors would only carry a weight while we take practical steps in this regard," sources said quoting the President as saying during his meeting with the Prime Minister. The two also discussed proposal of sending special emissaries to the world capitals for countering anti-Pakistan propaganda carried out by the Indians, the sources added. "Rather than war Pakistan wants to restore the peace process with India through the composite dialogue that India had suspended in the backdrop of Mumbai terror attacks," the meeting decided, said the sources. The two also decided to keep the masses in confidence on time-to-time developing situation with India so that the war hysteria should not inculcate negative sentiments in the society to eventually deter the economic activity. "Each and every Pakistani should know that their government is not up to pushing the country to any war, still it has to keep firmed up its stance on all issues including the menace of terrorism, defence of the country, and core dispute of Kashmir with India," the President added. Therefore, President Zardari desired tit-for-tat response to the so-called psychological or media warfare with India, the sources maintained. Earlier, the sources claimed that the Prime Minister told the President that the high-pitch play of his chosen Governor Salman Taseer against PML-N rule in the Punjab especially at the current critical juncture of time could fire back. "Zardari has finally agreed to Premier Gillani's vantage point of keeping the coalition intact with PML-N at the level of Punjab at least and promised to tone down the Governor," the sources added.
