MNAs send strong message to US

ISLAMABAD Condemning the conviction of Dr Aafia, Parliamentarians in the National Assembly on Wednesday urged the govt to take concrete steps for her repatriation to Pakistan. They were discussing on the adjournment motion regarding non-release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui from prison in US. Opening the discussion on the issue, Chaudhry Muhammad Birjees Tahir of PML-N urged the Parliamentarians to cancel all visits to US till Aafias release. He demanded of the government to register a case against then President Musharraf, PM and Interior Minister who, he blamed, were involved in handing over Aafia to US. He alleged that the then Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat was arrested in early days of martial law and was later released by Musharraf to appoint him Interior Minister. Other MNAs who took part in the debate included Raja Asad, Zafar Baig Bhithanni, Fakhar-un-Nisa, Atya Anayatullah, Khurram Dastagir, Khalida Manzoor and others. PML-Q Parliamentary Leader and former Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat, however, rejected the allegation and said that Aafia was not arrested in 2003 and September 2004 during his ministerial tenure. In 2004, FBI had issued a list of wanted persons that included the name of Dr Aafia, which proves that she was not arrested on March 30, 2003, he added. He said that he was arrested on the directives of General Musharraf but later was bailed out by the court. He said that the government should brief the House as from where and on what charges she was arrested and suggested a constitution of a committee comprising members from Senate and NA to pressure the US Administration warning it to undo the strategic ties if Dr Aafia was not released. Winding up the discussion, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that Dr Aafia might be brought back to Pakistan as a prisoner if Pakistan signs one of the two international conventions. Keeping this option in view, we contacted Dr Fauzia but she declined and opted for any other strategy. I also formed a committee in my chair, comprising Secretaries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, and Law, a prominent lawyer and Dr Fauzia, said Rehman Malik. He said that Aafias family had shown confidence in a group of US lawyers who have been issued visas to discuss the case at weekend.
