Senators for in-camera briefing on submarines

ISLAMABAD - Opposition on Thursday strongly protested in the Upper House of the Parliament against the prorogation of the Senate session well before its schedule and accused the government of striking an under the table deal with France to get old submarine technology. The Opposition senators also protested against the harassment meted out to people by the Frontier Constabulary (FC) in the name of security check in Quetta. The Opposition senators also condemned the incident of manhandling of the former Chairman National Reconstruction Bureau Daniyal Aziz by police as well as some elected District Nazims when they were going to hold protest rally in front of the Parliament. They termed police high-handedness against democratic norms and laws. The Opposition Senators demanded of the government to announce Local Government (LG) elections. When Presiding Officer Col (Retd) Tahir Hussain Mashhadi was proroguing the House, the opposition members protested against and raised slogans of 'Shame, 'Shame. Speaking on a point of order, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Senator Professor Ibrahim criticised the decision to prorogue the session earlier, which he said, was scheduled to continue till August 07. I strongly protest against it, he said. The Presidency has been made a ordinance factory. I had to submit resolution against the ordinance of Petroleum Development Levy but it was not brought on the agenda of the Senate, he said. Tariq Azeem of Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) said the government was getting old submarine technology from France while the country had already that technology. Jamal Laghari also strongly condemned the deal of Pakistan with France to get submarine technology at high cost. This deal is being conducted secretly with France to get old technology of submarine, he accused. He said that Germany had offered latest and modern Submarine technology at low cost. He demanded that the Navel Chief should brief the House in camera about the deal. Leader of Opposition in the Senate Wasim Sajjad condemned the incident of misbehaviour with former Chairman National Reconstruction Bureau Daniyal Aziz and some elected district nazims when they were holding protest rally on Wednesday. He termed it against the democratic norms. He said that in democratic government every person had right of difference of opinion and we should respect it. He added that the government should announce the elections of Local Bodies. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mahrin Anwar Raja said that the PPP government knew better of democratic norms. She said that a report about the incident would soon be submitted in the House. Raja Zafur-ul-Haq expressed serious concerns over the law and order situation of the country and said that the issue of Balochistan was very serious and claimed that the forces of neighbouring country were involved to create such situation. He said that situation was being speared across the country. This situation is not limited to the NWFP and Balochistan, he said. He proposed the House that Prime Minster Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani should call a meeting with the Chief Ministers of the provinces and make strategy to find its solution. Semeen Yusuf Siddiqui also expressed concerns over issuing as many as 500 prohibited bore licenses to one MNA. She said that a parliamentarian should not give permission to issue license in such a large number. Meanwhile, Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo of National Party (NP) staged walk out form the Upper House of the Parliament against worsening law and order situation in Balochistan and misbehaviour of FC with the people. Speaking on a point of order, Mir Hasil Bazenjo said that on one hand, the government criticized absence of the Senators from the conferences convened to discuss Balochistan situation while on the other, FC is targeting the innocent people. The Senator said he would boycott the proceedings of the House until he got satisfactory reply from the government and was assured that the situation would be resolved soon. After this he staged walk out from the House.
