PESHAWAR Pakistan Army continued its countrywide relief and rescue activities for the affectees of unprecedented floods as all available troops of the army in respective areas have been mobilised and so far 14,250 peoples have been evacuated from the flood hit areas. A press released issued here on Friday said that 3,000 peoples were rescued in Swat, 2,000 in Tank, 3,000 in Risalpur, 3,450 in Nowshera, Charsadda and Pabbi. Efforts are in hand to rescue 2,800 tourists stranded in Kalam and being evacuated to safer places, 17 helicopters are taking part in these relief activities beside motorboats. It was added that army troops equipped with sufficient number of boats and life jackets, are busy in rescue activities at Nowshera, Jhelum and other flood-affected areas. Army troops in collaboration with the civil administration are operating at full stretch continuously. The release further informed that all the available troops of army in Malakand/Swat areas have been fully mobilised to carry out rescue and relief activities. The release added that 50 ton ration and 5,000 packets of meal have been drooped in the flood affected areas through helicopters. Air mobile ambulance (helicopter) has also been inducted to provide necessary first aid treatment to the stranded people, the press release said. It was also informed that additional 50 motorboats procured from Karachi have started arriving in Peshawar/Risalpur, while army engineers are also busy round the clock to keep the major roads open for traffic. Corps Commander Lt Gen Asif Yasin Malik visited various parts of flood-affected areas of district Charsadda, Peshawar and Nowshera and witnessed the ongoing rescue and relief activities. Twenty helicopters of Pak Army, besides a number of boats are actively participating in relief and rescue activities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Out of those 20 choppers, 10 are engaged in Peshawar valley, four each in DI Khan and Swat and two in Kohat to evacuate the people encircled by flood havocs. This was informed during a high-level meeting chaired by the Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Owais Ahmed Ghani at the Governors House on Friday. During the meeting, overall arrangements to rescue the flood-hit people were reviewed. The Governor was further informed that five out of 100 boats of Pak Navy had already reached Akora Khattak and were participating in the rescue operation while the remaining were in the freight process and expected to reach there shortly. Similarly, the meeting was informed that 15 out of 3,500 boats purchased by the provincial government were expected to reach Peshawar Friday evening from Karachi and efficient arrangements were made to put all of them into operation, as and when they became available. The Governor advised the authorities concerned to keep focusing on rescuing the affected people and drop them to the nearby safer places. Our foremost effort shall be to rescue maximum people from the flood havocs and drop them at the nearest safe place rather to make long travelling, he remarked. This is extremely emergent situation and it is appreciable that all the concerned are fully cognizant of their responsibilities and were efficiently engaged in the rescue activities. The government, he said, was sparing no effort in reaching to the affected people. Besides the provincial Chief Secretary, Javed Iqbal, senior officials of the Pakistan Army also attended the meeting.
