Sameer wins Junior title

LAHORE Pakistans sensational Junior Davis Cupper Samir Iftikhar upset second seeded Heera Ashiq in straight sets to lift the junior title of the All Pakistan Honnda Cup Tennis Championship here at the Model Town Club courts on Friday. He played flawless tennis to secure 6-4, 6-2 win and outclass his confident opponent in a professional manner. I will keep alive the tennis tradition of my tennis family, Sameer said after this important win. Sameer is the grandson of tennis legend Khawaja Iftikhar and son of former Davis Cupper Tayyab Iftihar. Pakistans tennis star Aisamul Haq is his first cousin and role model for him. Aisam is my role model. I started playing tennis watching him, he added. Earlier in the semi-finals, Sameer outplayed Usman Rafiq by smashing a score line of 6-0, 6-0 while Heera Ashiq beat Faizan Khuram 6-1, 6-1. In mens singles quarter-final round, all top seeds faced no resistance except Yasir Khan who was playing against Faisalabads star player Shehzad Khan. Using his experience Shahzad gave real tough time to Yasir by pushing him as much as the score dictates 7-5 (5) 5-7, 6-3. In the other three quarter-finals, Aqeel Khan beat Imran Shoukat of Multan 6-3, 6-3, Waqas Malik beat Tanveer Ashiq 6-4, 6-3, Jalil Khan beat Shehzad 6-3, 6-4. In the ladies category, Sara Mahboob and Saba Aziz reached the finals by beating Sara Mansoor and Mehak Khokhar respectively. Earlier in the quarter-finals, Sara Mansoor beat Rida Khalid 6-0, 6-0 and Mehak Khokher beat Natasha Shahid 6-1, 6-4. Saba Aziz beat Iman Qureshi 6-2, 6-2. Today, Sara Mahboob will face Saba Aziz in the finals. In the boys singles U-14 round, a very interesting quarter-final was played between Raja Roshan of Sargodha and Kashanul Haq of Rawalpindi. We have no proper coaching facility at our playing place at Sargodha moreover in the absence of qualified coaches it becomes extremely tough to groom ourselves in the technical game of tennism, said Roshan, young future tennis star. In mens doubles semi-final competitions, Aqeel Khan and his brother Jalil Khan seed no 1 beat Shezad Khan and Irfan Ullah 6-3, 6-2 while in second semi-final, Yasir Khan and Tanveer Ashiq beat Waqas Malik and Imran Shokat 6-4, 6-7 (5) and super tie break 10-6. Todays programme: Ladies final match will be played at 4 pm, mens singles semi-finals will be played at 10 am, boys singles U-14 at 4 pm and veteran competitions for both categories will be played at 4 pm.
