Shabbir wins CNS Open crown

KARACHI - Shabbir Iqbal of Pakistan Navy maintained his sub par performance in the UMA 16th Chief of Naval Staff Open Golf to finish the four-round 72 hole competition with an aggregate of seven-under-281 to win the coveted event for the seventh time and pocketed the purse of Rs 486,400 here on Sunday at Karachi Golf Club. Matloob Ahmed, who started promisingly with six under in the Rs 3.5 million championships, struggled back in the contention and finished second six strokes behind the winner at 287. It was a good come back for the Lahore Gymkhana player whose effort did not go vain and he took back home a lucrative big purse. Pakistan Navy is proud to have a significant contribution to promote the lovely game of golf in the country by regularly organising tournaments at various levels. Over the years, the CNS Open Golf Championship has attained a significant importance in the Pakistan Golf Federation tournaments, offering delight and mirth to the golfers and onlookers from all across the country. The championship is another step in this direction. A huge field of 388 players registered in professionals, amateurs, ladies and juniors. The prize money for the professional is the highest-ever amount in golf circuit of the country. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir NI (M) graced the finals and expressed his views about the efforts of Navy in promotion of golf at national level. He also handed the key of a car to M Akhtar who for the second time won automobile in hole-in-one competition. He putted the shot in one drive on 11th hole. Sajid Khan of Arabian Sea Country Club won the amateur title. Pakistan's leading amateur Ali Hai did not defend his title as he underwent treatment at a local hospital for appendix the day championship started.
