LAHORE - Farhan Mehboob registered an easy win against younger brother Waqar Mehboob to annex the 4th FMC International Squash Championship title here at the Punjab Squash Complex on Saturday.
Elder brother Farhan took just 25 minutes to overpower his younger brother Waqar 11-5, 11-3, 11-9 in the final played at the jam-packed Punjab Squash complex.
Farhan was off to flying start and displayed quality squash and played power shots to put pressure on Waqar which resulted in his first game’s 11-5 win over his younger brother. Farhan continued his dominance as he outlast Waqar 11-3 in the second game while in the third game, Farhan started toying with his brother and allowed him to play the game freely. When the score was tied at 9-9, Farhan showed his class and started playing aggressively to win the game 11-9 and registered an impressive title victory.
Squash legends Jahangir Khan and Gogi Allauddin alogn with Punjab Squash Association (PSA) president Malik Amjad Noon, secretary Shiraz Saleem, vice president admin Tariq Rana, treasurer M Mansoor, squash lovers and players’ families not only witnessed the final but also cheered for both the brothers.
FMC Managing Director Farooq Shahid was chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony, and he along with Jahangir Khan handed prizes to the winner and runner-up of the championship.
The chief guest also lauded the brilliant performance of Farhan Mehboob and hoped he would continue serving the country at national and international level.
Speaking on the occasion, Jahangir Khan said: “We, the squash legends, have been working hard to give our country young and promising squash talent which may help it win laurels at national and international levels. This country gave us name and fame so it our responsibility to pay back in style, so producing squash champions for it will be a great honour for us and we have been striving for this noble cause.”
Lauding the support of FMC for the promotion of squash, Jahangir said: “We direly needed sponsors like FMC, who have been serving this game for the last four years and if the corporate sector will start supporting squash like this, then the time is not so far when we will able to regain our lost squash glory.
“The government should also pay attention towards this game, which had ruled the world four many decades. If this game is taken care properly and provided with proper funds, it is our promise squash will start flourishing further and winning medals for the country.”
Mehboob brothers also thanked the FMC and Punjab Squash Association for providing them a platform to exhibit their prowess and excel as top performers. “The PSA and FMC have made excellent arrangements for conducting the events and their efforts have made this event a remarkable one for us. This was for the second time this year, we brothers finished as finalists. We are very glad for our progress and wants further improvement in our game and skills which we will be able to enhance through hard work and dedication and try to earn more laurels for us as well as for our country.”
